Our origin

A call to media mission born from a deep inner tension

  1. 01

    Tension inside a disc-production factory

Dovecast Media began with a profound turning point in founder James Leong’s life.

At an optical-disc production factory, James led more than forty colleagues transferring many kinds of video into digital masters. The work brought him into contact with vast international media libraries and audiovisual commissions from major religious groups. As a Christian, he met their representatives daily. A heavy question grew within him: he was using his professional skill to help other religions communicate their teachings, while he saw few churches or pastors using the same medium. The gap filled him with tension and guilt.

  2. 02

A question no one seemed to answer

Seeking an answer, he collected religious media and visited churches, pastors, and Gospel organizations. He asked sincerely, ‘Major religions are using audiovisual media to communicate their message—why are we not using it to proclaim the Gospel?’

Many churches at the time responded cautiously, seeing this as a practice of other religions that Christians need not follow, and gave little positive response.

  3. 03

A need no one seemed to address

Gospel discs imported from Hong Kong to Malaysia were expensive, so many families copied and shared them because they could not afford more. James again brought this urgent market and Gospel need to pastors, but still found no shared conviction.

Repeated setbacks left him confused and discouraged, and resentment quietly began to grow.

  4. 04

    That afternoon in the office

One day, alone in his office, he poured out his complaint to God through tears: ‘Lord, why are the churches unwilling to stand up for You?’ He was holding a master tape prepared for a large production run of non-Christian religious media when a still yet unmistakably clear prompting of the Holy Spirit struck his heart:

‘You say my children do not love me—you are my child. If they do not respond, you can do it for me.’
  5. 05

    Answering the call

The words struck like a hammer and awakened him. Though his family had urged him to leave work that did not honor God, he had not been able to decide. In that moment, he knew with clarity that this was God’s call.

He and his wife then laid down the security of their former career, followed the Spirit’s leading, and began a journey of obedience. More than two decades later, that vision and commission remain clear—the unchanging beginning of Dovecast Media’s desire to serve this era through media and carry the true light.

Our faith

Eight faith positions

01

Scripture is the standard for every creation

We believe Scripture is God’s inerrant revelation and the highest standard for human life, belief, and service. Whatever creative form we use, every Dovecast Media production and lesson returns to biblical truth.

02

Media is a vessel for sacred mission

Media is neutral in itself; its value depends on the heart that uses it. In an age where everyone can publish, Christians need not avoid or fear media, but should use it purposefully to proclaim Christ and bear witness to the Gospel.

03

Media mission begins with the church

We believe media mission should move from near to far: beginning in the church, then reaching communities, the nation, and the world (Acts 1:8). Beyond making professional work, we help churches and organizations build mature media-ministry teams.

04

Pursue excellence for the Gospel

What we offer God should be our best fruit. Whether for worship within the church or mission beyond it, audiovisual work should uphold professional, high standards so Gospel work from Chinese churches can stand on cross-cultural and international platforms.

05

Integrity and compliance are non-negotiable

Christian media practitioners should be light and salt in ethics and law. We use properly licensed materials and legitimate software, reject plagiarism, and remain honest and transparent when using new technologies such as AI. Service is pleasing to God only with clean hands and a pure heart.

06

Defend sound truth in the digital tide

As heresies and misleading ideas gain ground online, the church must not be absent. A new generation of media practitioners needs sound formation, discernment, and digital-apologetics awareness so they can watch over truth and answer error faithfully.

07

Use emerging technology to extend God’s Kingdom

Technology is a tool God has given this generation, not a threat to faith. We approach AI and digital innovation with careful openness, learning to improve the quality and reach of Gospel communication so technology becomes an aid to mission.

08

Pass on gifts and raise a new generation of mission workers

Individual strength is limited; Kingdom inheritance is not. Dovecast Media is called not only to produce work, but to cultivate, inspire, and connect more Christians as they use their gifts in their own fields, keeping the fire of media mission spreading.
